I have been studying British history and the relationship with tea. Making a pot of tea is sometimes seen as an essential part of communicating with others. We have adopted this oriental wonder with open arms into our culture. The ritual of putting on the kettle is just as important to us as the ancient traditional Chinese tea ceremonies. It connects us as a nation and gives us the opportunity to stop and take stock.
The Chinese believe in celebrating the here and now, whatever you are doing. This is something that we seem to have lost in the modern world. I felt that this was perfect inspiration to create a piece of furniture that encourages you to sit back and enjoy the moment. I have also drawn inspiration from my surrounding city, the Victorian tenement buildings that created their own culture and community within the city of Dundee.
